Bologna – the learned, the fat and the red
There are three words to define Bologna, the capital of Emilia Romagna region: la dotta, la grassa e la rossa.
These words mean the learned, the fat and the red and they sum up the city very well. The words pay tribute to Bologna’s university, the oldest one of the Western world; to Bologna’s delicious cuisine, since it is home of some of the most famous Italian gourmet products; and to the dominant colour of the roofs and walls of Bologna’s Old Town.
As home to the oldest university in Europe, Bologna is a city rich in art and culture. The medieval centre, with its towers and 40 km of arcades is UNESCO World Heritage and is one of the best preserved in the world. And over 50 museums hold the city’s impressive heritage. Furthermore there are the music, theater, cinema, exhibitions… the great variety of cultural offer of the city makes Bologna a surprising destination. Bologna is also a modern and vibrant business city, heart of the famous Motor Valley – Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati, Maserati are based in the vicinity – its exhibition center and the district of packaging and mechanical factories.
Bologna enjoys a privileged geographical position and is a natural crossroads for Italy and Europe. It is easy to reach by any means of transportation: plane, train and car. In the historical city centre you can easily get around on foot, everything is centrally located and the efficient public transportation system allows you to quickly reach the entire city, near and far.
